Mitochondrial Derived Vesicles.
MDVs are a novel mitochondrial quality control mechanism. It is thought that MDVs focally remove oxidized and aged proteins and lipids to preserve the health of the parent organelle. Mitochondrial components may be trafficked to the lysosomal pathway for degradation or to other organelles as a form of communication. However, the structural composition of MDVs and how they contribute to neuronal mitochondrial maintenance are unclear.
